Ellen Howard has over 15 years of nursing experience and has been a certified nurse midwife with Laurel OB/GYN since 2016.

Ellen was born and raised in New Hampshire and attended the University of New Hampshire to study nursing, obtaining her B.S. in Nursing from UNH in 2004. She finished her final semester of coursework working and living on a Navajo Reservation in Shiprock, NM.

Ellen worked for the IHS, gaining valuable clinical and social experience while also exploring the beautiful southwestern United States. While in nursing school, a friend gave her a worn copy of Ina May Gaskin’s Spiritual Midwifery, and this writing inspired her to pursue a career in Midwifery.

Ellen moved to Asheville in 2004 as a registered nurse practicing primarily in women’s health at Mission Hospital. A few years later, she pursued her dream of becoming a midwife at East Carolina University, obtaining her Master of Science in Nursing with a concentration in Midwifery in 2010.

Before joining the physicians at Laurel OB/GYN, Ellen practiced as a CNM at New Dawn Midwifery in Asheville from 2011 to 2016. She has also welcomed babies as a CNM in Sylva, NC, delivering with Smoky Mountain OB/GYN at Harris Regional Hospital from 2010 to 2011.

Ellen Howard has attended over 600 childbirth deliveries throughout her career and strives to honor each woman’s individual birth plan while providing safety for her and her baby.

She is very knowledgeable about gynecology and contraception options (including natural family planning), and enjoys counseling women on the topic of family planning.

Ellen has always had a passion for travel and visiting new places. While in midwifery school, Ellen studied abroad for a summer in Puebla, Mexico taking an immersion Spanish language course. While in Mexico she was afforded the special opportunity to visit labor and delivery units and meet with local midwives working at a freestanding birth center. She has found that the ability to communicate with patients in Spanish has been invaluable while working in the medical field.

Ellen enjoys spending time with her family, taking trips, and camping. When Ellen isn’t at work and spending time with family, her favorite hobby is dancing. She loves to contra, swing, and salsa, and enjoys the vibrant dance community here in Asheville. She lives on the sest side of town with her spouse and daughter.

Patient Reviews

Overall patient rating for UWH of The Carolinas:

Annual Well Woman Exam

Kim is always so amazing and takes her time with me. She always makes me feel much better and more knowledgeable about any of my questions or concerns! I always recommend Kim to everyone because she’s just that great!

Dr. Cohen is the best. She is caring, thorough, and reassuring. I have even recommended her to some of my friends.

Short wait time. Office and clinical staff are friendly. The physician took time to answer my questions.

Post-Partum Appointment

Jessie is fantastic and knows her stuff. Super knowledgeable and answers all my wild and weird questions. The body goes through some crazy changes during and after pregnancy and I'm so grateful for her and the ENTIRE TEAM at TP4W. Everyone has been so friendly and kind during my entire time as a patient there and I couldn't recommend it enough to our friends and family. I wish Jessie could be my primary care doctor! Ha!

Yes the entire staff was friendly and the doctor was very personable

Annual Well Woman Exam

Dr Freeman is very caring and professional.

Follow-up Visit (Problem / Complication)

Dr Goodrich very professional, courteous, efficient, I could go on and on about her. She is wonderful. Staff is too

Virtual Visit / Telemedicine

Because I was late and he was nice to me. I did feel a little rushed thru visit and forgot to ask some questions.

Annual Well Woman Exam

Dr. Motyka is the only doctor I don't dread seeing. She spends more time with me than my primary care doctor and covers more areas of my health than my primary care doctor too. She is an out-of-the box thinker and her office is soothing instead of anxiety producing. I have been going to her for years now, from her previous offices in Raleigh, then Carrboro and now Chapel Hill, and it is totally worth the drive and the expense (she doesn't participate in Medicare).

OB Care

I always have a good experience with Dr. Almquist. She always takes the time to go over any concerns that I may have.

Annual Well Woman Exam

Monica is great. I just think she needs to spend a little more time with me. She always seems rushed to move on to next patient

STI Testing / Treatment

Amanda was terrific. Very genuine, compassionate and knowledgeable. She made me feel comfortable and took the time necessary to talk through options.

Breast Exam

Dr.Heinemann is great! I’ve been seeing her for years. She is quick, identifies the issue, lays next steps and suggests what she’s going to do and why. They know their stuff and involve newer technology which is amazing as the health industry evolves. Would recommend her for women health needs and will be seeing her for years to come!

Dr. Roberts was very attentive and took her time to discuss all health related topics. She is a good listener which is very important in healthcare.
