Dr. Summer Gilmer, who is originally from Spartanburg, S.C., has resided in Asheville for the past six years.

She went to undergraduate school at Wofford College in her hometown, where she studied biology and was a member of the school’s tennis team. She earned her medical degree from the University of South Carolina, in Columbia, and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mountain Area Health Education Center in Asheville.

After her training she worked in Boone, N.C., for five years before returning to Asheville to join Laurel OB/GYN.

Dr. Gilmer enjoys following a patient through her pregnancy, getting to know her personally, and continuing to see her throughout her lifetime. Whether its an annual exam or another gynecological concern, she provides individualized care to address her patient’s unique needs and health goals.

Dr. Gilmer is an active mom to a son and daughter. When she’s not providing care to her patients, she can be found playing outside with her kids or trying to defeat her children at card games, like UNO and Go Fish. She’s also an avid reader and runner.

Dr.Gilmer was absolutely wonderful through my pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum visit. She does exactly what she says she will do. Is extremely personable. She brings a calm presence during delivery. This was our second baby and was the best experience we have ever had due to her!

Gynecological Problem Visit

The office staff and the ultrasound tech were great. I was disappointed that my doctor believes that severe pain is "just what your normal cycle is like" and then, without any further discussion, inquiry, or education, told me the medication I could take that might mask the symptoms. I don't expect my doctor to perform a miracle, but I expect her to have and share some basic understanding of what is happening to cause my severe pain. I didn't receive information about what my diagnosis was or education on the possible causes or biological processes at play. I spent a few hours researching myself and now I understand that I have primary dysmenorrhea, I learned the most current understanding of what causes it, and some ways to support healing from this really awful pain. I feel sad thinking that other women with less education, self efficacy, or access to resources might believe that severe pain is normal.
