Dr. Summer Gilmer, who is originally from Spartanburg, S.C., has resided in Asheville for the past six years.

She went to undergraduate school at Wofford College in her hometown, where she studied biology and was a member of the school’s tennis team. She earned her medical degree from the University of South Carolina, in Columbia, and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mountain Area Health Education Center in Asheville.

After her training she worked in Boone, N.C., for five years before returning to Asheville to join Laurel OB/GYN.

Dr. Gilmer enjoys following a patient through her pregnancy, getting to know her personally, and continuing to see her throughout her lifetime. Whether its an annual exam or another gynecological concern, she provides individualized care to address her patient’s unique needs and health goals.

Dr. Gilmer is an active mom to a son and daughter. When she’s not providing care to her patients, she can be found playing outside with her kids or trying to defeat her children at card games, like UNO and Go Fish. She’s also an avid reader and runner.

Gynecological Problem Visit

Dr. Gilmer was very helpful- I appreciated her willingness and time, as she answered my immediate questions. I do have additional questions and will call to schedule an appt or speak to a nurse. The front desk staff has not been pleasant, and I’ve been very underwhelmed with their assistance. The contacts I’ve spoken to could not figure out what to schedule for even when consulting my chart, did not call back when we were disconnected and put me on elongated holds numerous times to the point where I had to explain to multiple people within each phone call why I was calling. The providers are as tremendous as the front desk staff is unhelpful and often cold- I recall this being my experience in the past.

Nurse came in initially (which I’m used to), then med student came in asking the same questions, then Dr came in with med student asking the same questions, then nurse came back in with a 2nd nurse during the exam. I guess she was a student too? I don’t even know. They never told me why so many were in there!! This was a normal pelvic and breast exam. Nothing crazy or unusual. 4 people were in the room!! During my breast exam, the Dr was on one side and the med student on the other at the same time?! So awkward! I was never asked if this was ok. It was just assumed. I also have an issue having to tell 4 people what I wanted to talk to just my Dr about. I only see her once a year and really don’t like that I’m asked if I have questions or concerns from the nurse prior as well as the med student and then the Dr! I had 4 women in there listening to what I just wanted my drs opinion on!
